After about an hour of tasting tests, augmented by authentic Italian cookies from the famous Russo Bakery in Queens, three different blends were chosen for final review by the companies executive management during their next board meeting. Samples were prepared and during the board meeting, a final selection was made. We then custom packaged the final choice with the firms logo and deliver it on an as needed basis to their two offices in NYC and over 700 employees.

Independent Office Suppliers Elude Big-Chain Chokehold
Adapt to remain competitive

Stanley Brown, an office services manager for a midtown law firm, admits that for a moment he was stumped. A partner at Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo recently asked Mr. Brown to stock a particular brand of vanilla tea, but none of the big office supply vendors he works with could come up with the goods.
Then Mr. Brown called Airline Stationery Co. Inc., a small independent supplier. Not only did Airline have the tea, it promised immediate delivery. "That's why I use them," says Mr. Brown. "They provide a kind of service that bigger companies can't."
Providing such attentive customer service is just one of the ways in which a group of about a dozen Manhattan office supply stores have pulled off the impossible. They have survived the invasion of office supply superstores.
In the teeth of an assault that began in the mid-1980s, many independents have also tapped into the buying power of purchasing groups to compete on prices, and some have added business lines-everything from coffee (and vanilla tea) service to copier sales.
"We were one of the first to have to deal with Staples, and 16 years later, we're still dealing with them," says Jeffrey Siskind, a co-owner of Airline, which has two stores and annual revenues of around $10 million. Today, Staples alone has 18 outposts in Manhattan, including four just a block and a half from both of Airline's midtown locations.
As second- or third-generation retailers, independent office suppliers such as Mr. Siskind have seen trends come and go. But nothing quite prepared them for superstores.
The new behemoths on the block not only boasted significant buying power but also big ad budgets. Many independents found themselves literally surrounded. Several failed. The survivors adapted.
Independents benefit from a short and highly efficient supply chain. That allows them to offer the same sort of overnight service as chains do. "This industry depends on a network of wholesalers, and pretty much everything I order from them I can deliver in any city nationwide the next day," says Airline's Mr. Siskind.
When it comes to advertising, though, the independents admit they cannot begin to match the chains. Similarly, rather than using phone banks manned by teams of operators, the independent dealers, with help from veteran salespeople, typically take orders themselves. The approach, though, has its benefits: lasting personal relationships and loyal customers.
To build on these ties, some independents have expanded their offerings. Airline started ABC Office Essentials in 1995, a company that provides corporate coffee service to over 1,000 New York area clients.
